Get to Know the Story behind Youth Cancer Hong Kong

In September 2019, at the age of 19, Mr. Timothy Chan was diagnosed with mixed germ cell tumor. His life changed drastically in an instant - he had to take an immediate leave from school to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.

Although his treatment was ultimately successful, his cancer journey left him with profound reflections. This was because the concept of "adolescent and young adult cancer" was not well recognized in Hong Kong at the time, and there were no organizations specifically dedicated to supporting adolescent and young adult cancer patients. 

During his hospitalization, he spent most of his time surrounded by elderly cancer patients, receiving the same physical and psychological treatment as they did. After the treatment, he faced significant changes as a survivor, struggling to reconnect with his studies and career. With no way to seek help, he had to face the challenges alone. These experiences made him feel the helplessness of adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors in Hong Kong, as well as the urgent need to provide them with support.

Stars of Life Mutual Support Platform

In July 2022, Mr. Timothy Chan first shared his vision on social media, leading to the official establishment of “Stars of Life,” Hong Kong's first platform for adolescent and young cancer support and advocacy platform.

In the following year, thanks to the support of like-minded individuals and the selfless contributions of professionals, the platform continued to grow and hosted many events. The issue of adolescent and young cancer began to gain attention from the public.

Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Services Group

On July 20, 2023, with the support of all founding members, the "Youth Cancer Hong Kong" was officially registered and recognized by the Hong Kong government as a charitable organization under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance. Apart from the "Stars of Life Mutual Support Platform", the "Medical Committee" and the "Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Committee" have been established. Over 20 people from diverse medical and social welfare professional backgrounds have joined to provide services for adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors. Our services continue to expand to this date.
